Manchester United are officially having their worst season in Premier League history.

For the first time since the inaugural 1992/93 campaign, the Red Devils have failed to reach 40 points after 24 games of a season.

Defeat to table-topping rivals Liverpool at the weekend was compounded on Wednesday night as Burnley secured a first victory at Old Trafford since 1962.

Chris Wood opened the scoring and a memorable 2-0 victory for the Clarets was wrapped up in style by Jay Rodriguez, whose stunning strike darkened the mood of the United faithful.

The vast majority of United supporters were on their feet when chants of ‘stand up if you hate Glazers’ echoed around Old Trafford, while the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also copped flak.

As it stands, United are fifth in the table and have just 34 points – a whopping 30 behind leaders Liverpool and the same amount as Wolves in seventh place.

It is the first time United have had under 40 points at this stage of a Premier League season.

The Red Devils next take on Wolves on Saturday at home, before travelling to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea.

The 4-0 victory over the Blues on the opening weekend seems like a very distant memory at this stage, and failure to get maximum points from the two upcoming games could see clear daylight form between the Red Devils and the Champions League places.

Perhaps even more alarming is the fact Sheffield United are just one point behind Solskjaer’s flailing side and have games against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth to come.

Failure to get at least one victory from their next two fixtures could well see Manchester United languishing in the bottom half of the table as the season veers towards an inevitable conclusion.

Their woeful form under Solskjaer is compounded by the fact bitter rivals Liverpool are on unward trajectory.

The Merseyside club – Champions League winners in 2019 – are unbeaten in 39 league games and romping to the title this season.

Since Solskjaer was appointed permanent manager of United in March 2018, Liverpool have taken 85 points out of a possible 87.

By contrast, United have collected only 42 points out of a possible 96.

Defeat to Burnley means Solskjaer has now lost more Premier League games than he has won and has a worse win percentage record than any United manager in recent history – winning just 34 per cent of his matches.

His predecessor, Jose Mourinho, won 54 per cent of league games at Old Trafford before being sacked in December 2018.

The two managers who came before Mourinho and suffered the same fate, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes, also left Old Trafford with a superior win ratio to Solskjaer – 50 per cent and 51 per cent respectively.

They all pale in comparison to Sir Alex Ferguson, who reigned from 1996 to 2013 and led the club to 13 Premier League titles. He had 528 wins from 810 league games, a win ratio of 65 per cent.

Since Fergie’s retirement, United have failed to win the title and they seem further away than ever under Solskjaer.
